Would you like to use technology to communicate better with your child with autism?
Dr. Hyekyueng Seung and Dr. Gondy Leroy are looking for a child with autism and a parent to participate in a study evaluating the use of a PECS-like system on a mobile device. The smartphone used for communication is provided by us and optimized for your child.
Why participate?
- You will receive assistance on improving communication skills. We will coach you how to improve communication with your child using the device. The device will serve as a means to increase your child’s verbal communication.
- You will have a unique chance to work with modern technology for communication. Use of the mobile devices has been shown to be less stigmatizing than paper-based approaches to communication.
- The software will be optimized for use by your child. For the duration of the study, you may use the mobile device (we use a PDA). The software is available free of charge and we will help you install it on your own device after the study if you decide to buy one yourself.
- Visual overviews of progress of the child
- Have an impact on development of new technology … our goal is to improve our software. Your participation is essential and has a big impact.
Who can participate?
- children who are diagnosed with autism,
- who are nearly nonverbal,
- who currently use PECS or have used it in the past,
- who can use a smartphone,
- for whom the parents are interested in participating, and
- and who live in the vicinity of Fullerton, California
